Days out from Costa del Azahar
The Reservoir & Dam at Benifassa
Just north of the town of La Senia, inland from Vinarós at the foot of the mountains is this large impressive lake of outstanding beauty.
The air is so fresh and there is plenty of opportunity to walk or just to sit and drink in the scenery. You will pass a couple of great restaurants by the river on the way.
At the top there is a snack bar for drinks, coffee and light food. There are canoes and pedal boats for hire, but this haven of peace and tranquility is never too busy and is well worth a visit.
The Delta del Ebro
The natural park of the Delta del Ebro is one of outstanding beauty and is only a short journey from Vinarós on the N340 to Sant Carles de la Rapita or by going along the motorway.
At 320 square kilometres, it is important aquatic habitat of the western Mediterranean, after the Camargue.
The area is completely flat and the landscape is made up of rice paddy fields, great lagoons surrounded by reedbeds, horticultural areas, and salt flats all leading down to the sea where there are miles of largely deserted beaches and dunes.
Many of the small villages have single storey houses and the restaurants serve specialties of the region, largely constituting seafood and rice. There is so much to do and see. It is a great area for bird watching and there are special stations from which you can observe the local wildlife such as flamingos, with pictorial charts for help with identification.
There are also opportunities for boat trips, bicycle hire and guided tours.
Morella
Visiting Morella is like going back in time. This small town is built on a rock overlooking the Mediterranean sea from a height of 1.072 m above sea level. The impressive castle of Morella sits on the top of the hill, and the village is surrounded by an ancient wall.
Visitors will enjoy strolling around Morella's peaceful streets which have a historical and artistic feeling to them. The historical walled area of the town deserves special interest. At the top of the hill, the castle offers outstanding views. Other historical buildings worth a visit include the Arciprestal Church, the Royal Cloister, San Francisco Convent etc.
Morella and its surroundings is famous for its excellent cheeses, cured meats, pumpkin tarts, sweet potato tarts, meat pies, herb liquor, honey, olive oil, truffles, ham and game. The main street (called principal) in Morella is a lively area lined with small shops selling local produce at reasonable prices.
